Sigiriya

๐Ÿž️ **Sigiriya – The Lion Rock Fortress of Sri Lanka**

๐Ÿ“ **Locaion:**

- **District:** Matale

- **Province:** Central Province

- **Distance from Colombo:** Approximately 170 km (about 3–4 hours by road)

 ๐Ÿ“œ **Historical Background:**

Sigiriya was built in the **5th century AD** (around 477–495 AD) by **King Kashyapa I**.

๐Ÿ‘‘ **The Story of King Kashyapa:**

- After **murdering his father, King Dhatusena**, Kashyapa feared revenge from his brother **Moggallana**, the rightful heir to the throne.

- Moggallana fled to India, while Kashyapa moved the capital from Anuradhapura to Sigiriya and built a magnificent fortress-palace atop the massive rock.

- Years later, Moggallana returned with an army. In the final battle, Kashyapa’s war elephant turned aside at a critical moment — interpreted as a sign of cowardice — and rather than be captured, Kashyapa took his own life.

๐Ÿฐ **Architectural & Cultural Marvels of Sigiriya:**

Sgiriya is considered one of the **oldest planned urban centers in the world**. It served as a royal palace, fortress, and city — all built atop and around a 200-meter-high granite rock.

 ๐Ÿ”น **Key Features:**

 1. **Lion’s Paw Entrance**

- The original entrance was through the paws of a giant lion statue — hence the name “**Sigiriya**” (Sinhala: เทƒීเถœිเถปිเถบ — “Lion Rock”).

- Today, only the massive **lion’s paws** remain. The head and body were lost to time.

 2. **Sigiriya Frescoes (The Sigiri Damsels)**

- Located halfway up the rock, these are **exquisite paintings of celestial maidens** (apsaras) holding flowers.

- Originally over **500 paintings**, only **21 remain today**.

- These frescoes are famed for their **vibrant colors, grace, and realism**, often compared to the Ajanta Caves in India.

 3. **Mirror Wall (Ketipola)**

- A highly polished plaster wall that once acted as a **mirror** for the king.

- Covered with **ancient graffiti** — over **1,000 poems and messages** written by visitors from the 6th to 14th centuries.

- Considered the **world’s oldest surviving public “guestbook” or graffiti wall**.

#### 4. **Sigiri Graffiti (Poems & Notes)**

- These writings praise the beauty of the frescoes, express love, or comment on the climb.

- Written in **ancient Sinhala**, they offer rare insight into early Sri Lankan society and language.

5. **Water Gardens (World’s Oldest Landscaped Gardens)**

- Located at the base of the rock, these are among the **oldest surviving landscaped gardens in the world**.

- Feature **symmetrical pools, fountains (still working seasonally!), canals, and moats**.

- A marvel of **ancient hydraulic engineering** — water was pumped using gravity and pressure systems.

 6. **Palace on the Summit**

- At the top of the rock lies the remains of **King Kashyapa’s palace complex**.

- Includes foundations of the royal residence, audience hall, cisterns, and terraced gardens.

- Offers **breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views** of the surrounding forests and countryside.

 ๐ŸŒ **UNESCO World Heritage Site**

- Designated a **UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982** under **Cultural Criteria**.

- Often called the **“Eighth Wonder of the World.”**

 ๐Ÿงญ **Visitor Tips:**

- **Best Time to Visit:** Early morning (before 9 AM) or late afternoon (after 4 PM) to avoid heat and crowds.

"Mihintale: The Sacred Dawn of Buddhism in Sri Lanka"

In 247 BCE (mid-3rd century BCE, according to several historical sources), Arahant Mahinda , the son of the great Indian Emperor Ashoka , arrived in Sri Lanka to propagate the teachings of the Buddha. On the full moon day of Poson (usually in June or July ), King Devanampiya Tissa was hunting in the forests of Mihintale . At that very moment, Arahant Mahinda encountered the king on the rocky summit and delivered the Chulahatthipadopama Sutta (The Shorter Discourse on the Simile of the Elephant’s Footprint).
